How it works
Words are runs of non-space characters, sentences are split on . ! and ?, and paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, the usual figure for adult prose, and always rounds up to at least one minute.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my count differ from Word or Google Docs?
Each tool draws word boundaries slightly differently around hyphens, slashes and numbers. Differences of a fraction of a percent on real prose are normal; no counter is more official than another.
How is reading time calculated?
Words divided by 200 per minute, rounded to the nearest minute with a minimum of one. Slow this down mentally for technical material, which people read closer to 100 to 150 words per minute.
Is what I paste stored anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser tab as you type; there is no server, no storage and no analytics on the text itself.
