How it works
Characters are counted as Unicode code points, so an emoji counts as one character rather than two. The no-spaces figure strips every whitespace character including line breaks; the standard figure counts them all.
Frequently asked questions
Do emoji and accents count as one character?
Here, yes: counting is by Unicode code point. Beware that some platforms bill differently; SMS in particular counts by encoding units, where one emoji can cost you several characters.
What are the limits worth knowing?
Meta titles show about 60 characters in search results and meta descriptions about 155. An SMS segment is 160 characters in the basic alphabet, or 70 once any Unicode character forces the wider encoding.
Does the count include line breaks?
The total count includes them, the without-spaces count does not: line breaks are whitespace. That matches how most publishing limits are enforced.
